This species was first described by Caldwell J. S. in 1944 in the following paper: Notes on some less common genera of tropical Cixiidae (Homoptera). The Ohio Journal of Science. Columbus, 44(6) : 252-254.

It is currently classified in order Hemiptera Linné, 1758, suborder Fulgoromorpha Evans, 1946, superfamily Delphacoidea Leach, 1815, family Cixiidae Spinola, 1839, subfamily Cixiinae Spinola, 1839, tribe Pintaliini Metcalf, 1938, genus Diastrocixius Caldwell, 1944, and it represents the type species for its genus.

From a taxonomic perspective, the species Diastrocixius thelyus is currently subdidivded into one subspecies: Diastrocixius thelyus basalis Caldwell, 1944.

Diastrocixius thelyus is an extant taxon.

2. Diastrocixius thelyus Caldwell, 1944 geographical distribution and bioregions

According to the geographical TDWG standard (2001), Diastrocixius thelyus Caldwell, 1944 are known from the Neotropical biogeographical region as defined by Wallace (1876). More precisely, they are distributed in the Panamanian zoogeographic region as defined by Holt (2013). Figures 1 and 2 display dynamic graphs showcasing the longitudinal and latitudinal profiles of Diastrocixius thelyus Caldwell, 1944 arround the across the globe according to their species richness. A scroll on the histogram bars displays the species richness of the corresponding regions.

3. Diastrocixius thelyus Caldwell, 1944 biological interactions
