1. Orosanga japonica (Melichar, 1898) taxonomy

Orosanga japonica (Melichar, 1898) is currently considered as a valid taxon of species rank in the family Ricaniidae Amyot & Audinet-Serville, 1843 of the Fulgoromorpha. This species was first described by Melichar L. in 1898 in the following paper: Vorläufige Beschreibnungen neuer Ricaniiden. Verhandlungen der Kaiserlich-Königlichen Zoologisch-botanischen Gesellschaft in Wien. Wien, 48: 384-400.

It is currently classified in family Ricaniidae Amyot & Audinet-Serville, 1843, subfamily Ricaniinae Amyot & Audinet-Serville, 1843, genus Orosanga Fennah, 1971.

Orosanga japonica is an extant taxon.

2. Orosanga japonica (Melichar, 1898) geographical distribution and bioregions

According to the geographical TDWG standard (2001), Orosanga japonica (Melichar, 1898) are known from the Oriental and Palaearctic biogeographical regions as defined by Wallace (1876). More precisely, they are distributed in the Eurasian, Japanese, Oriental and Saharo-Arabian zoogeographic regions as defined by Holt (2013). Figures 1 and 2 display dynamic graphs showcasing the longitudinal and latitudinal profiles of Orosanga japonica (Melichar, 1898) arround the across the globe according to their species richness. A scroll on the histogram bars displays the species richness of the corresponding regions.

3. Orosanga japonica (Melichar, 1898) biological interactions

As all planthoppers, Orosanga japonica (Melichar, 1898) are obligatory phytophagous terrestrial insects; they mainly feed on host plants belonging to the following orders: Apiales (Araliaceae), Asterales (Asteraceae), Brassicales (Brassicaceae), Cornales (Hydrangeaceae), Cucurbitales (Cucurbitaceae), Dipsacales (Viburnaceae), Ebenales (Ebenaceae), Ericales (Actinidiaceae), Fabales (Fabaceae), Fagales (Betulaceae, Fagaceae, Juglandaceae), Lamiales (Lamiaceae), Laurales (Lauraceae), Malvales (Tiliaceae), Poales (Poaceae), Ranunculales (Ranunculaceae), Rosales (Moraceae, Rosaceae, Urticaceae), Sapindales (Rutaceae), Solanales (Solanaceae) and Vitales (Vitaceae).
Figure 3a depicts the orders of plants on which Orosanga japonica (Melichar, 1898) feeds, and figure 3b the percentage they represent in the diet for the entire species. Figures 4a and 4b do the same more precisely for the family level of these plants.
