This species was first described by Gnezdilov V. M. and O'Brien L. B. in 2014 in the following paper: A new subbrachypterous genus of the family Flatidae (Homoptera, Auchenorrhyncha: Fulgoroidea) from the Dominican Republic. Entomologicheskoe Obozrenie, XCIII(1) : 145-150.
It is currently classified in order Hemiptera Linné, 1758, suborder Fulgoromorpha Evans, 1946, superfamily Fulgoroidea Latreille, 1807, family Flatidae Spinola, 1839, genus Cyclopterum Gnezdilov & O'Brien, 2014, and it represents the type species for its genus.
Cyclopterum hispaniolum is an extant taxon.
