1. Atretus Emeljanov, 2007 taxonomy
Atretus Emeljanov, 2007 is currently considered as a valid taxon of genus rank in the family Cixiidae Spinola, 1839 of the Fulgoromorpha. This genus was first described by Emeljanov A. F. in 2007 in the following paper: Some new genera of the Oliarus group from the Oriental Region (Homoptera: Cixiidae) [2006]. Zoosystematica Rossica, 15(2) : 291-292.
It is currently classified in order Hemiptera Linné, 1758, suborder Fulgoromorpha Evans, 1946, superfamily Delphacoidea Leach, 1815, family Cixiidae Spinola, 1839, subfamily Cixiinae Spinola, 1839, tribe Pentastirini Emeljanov, 1971, subtribe Pentastirina Emeljanov, 1971.
Currently 6 species have been described in Atretus, as summarized in Table 1.

The type species of the genus is Atretus horishanus (Matsumura, 1914).
Atretus is an extant taxon.
2. Atretus Emeljanov, 2007 geographical distribution and bioregions
According to the geographical TDWG standard (2001), Atretus Emeljanov, 2007 are known from the Oriental and Palaearctic biogeographical regions as defined by Wallace (1876). More precisely, they are distributed in the Chinese, Eurasian, Japanese and Oriental zoogeographic regions as defined by Holt (2013). 3. Atretus Emeljanov, 2007 biological interactions
As all planthoppers, Atretus Emeljanov, 2007 are obligatory phytophagous terrestrial insects.
